Are different types of probiotics good for different conditions?

Research has now progressed to a point that indicates that different types of gut bacteria are involved in different mechanisms of health. A recent study in people with Alzheimer’s showed Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium improved the score in a common cognitive test after just 12 weeks1, both blood pressure and obesity can be improved through use of a mix of different types of probiotic2,3, and IBS is best treated with VSL#3, SCM-III, lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium4. Depression may be positively influenced by lactobacillus helveticus, Bifidobacterium infantis and Bifidobacterium logum4, though further studies are required.
