Which foods are best for improving and maintaining gut health?
Fermented foods, such as yoghurt, sauerkraut and kimchi all naturally contain probiotics, which can help with recolonising bacteria which have been damaged or eliminated. This isn’t the only part of the story though.
Including plenty of wholegrains, legumes, fruits and vegetables is also essential. These foods contain compounds called prebiotics, which provide the healthy bacteria with food to help keep them healthy. Some of the best sources are onion, chickpeas, asparagus, just ripe banana and pearl barley, however a wide variety of foods may help with improving diversity in types of bacteria.
There is also some research that indicates that omega 3 fatty acids play a role in gut health as well, due to increased butyrate producing bacteria (which are particularly important for a healthy colon) with an omega 3 rich diet1,2.
Reducing intake of fatty, processed take away foods, sugar sweetened beverages and alcohol can also contribute significantly to improving gut health.
